Mirror iPhone to Tesla: TslaMirror FAQ

Set up iPhone screen mirroring on Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and other supported vehicles; understand AirPlay differences and troubleshoot connections. Updated for TslaMirror 9.87 on October 28, 2026.

Why are the iOS and Android apps now both called TslaMirror?

The iOS and Android apps were both previously called TeslaMirror. Both platforms now use the name TslaMirror; the Android app has been renamed to match iOS. Older guides and screenshots may still show TeslaMirror. The existing App Store and Google Play listings, support website, and platform-specific casting addresses remain the same.

Tesla AirPlay: how does iPhone mirroring work?

TslaMirror displays your iPhone in the Tesla browser using iOS Screen Broadcast and your Personal Hotspot. It does not add native AirPlay or Apple CarPlay to the vehicle. Start the broadcast inside TslaMirror; the app does not make your Tesla appear in the iPhone Control Center’s AirPlay device list.

iPhone → hotspot → Tesla browser

  1. Connect the hotspot

While parked, connect the Tesla to your iPhone Personal Hotspot.

  2. Enable Proxy

Open TslaMirror on the iPhone and turn on Proxy.

  3. Start Broadcast

Tap Start, then Start Broadcast. Keep the iPhone unlocked.

  4. Open the connection address

Enter https://TslaMirror.com in the Tesla browser’s address bar.

Seeing this support website instead of your phone screen? Check the spelling: TslaMirror.com is the iOS connection address; TeslaMirror.com is the product and support website. If the connection page does not load, check the hotspot, Proxy, and Screen Broadcast. Protected video may appear black even with a working connection.

How to mirror iPhone to Tesla Model 3 or Model Y

Use only while parkedComplete setup and operate the phone or Tesla browser only while the vehicle is safely parked. Local laws may restrict use of the built-in browser.
  1. Update the Tesla infotainment system when an update is available.
  2. Connect the Tesla to the iPhone Personal Hotspot. MCU2 or MCU3 hardware is required.
  3. Make sure the iPhone is not in Low Power Mode.
  4. Open TslaMirror and turn on Proxy.
  5. Tap Start, then choose Start Broadcast.
  6. Open https://TslaMirror.com in the Tesla browser. This connection address is different from the official product website TeslaMirror.com.
  7. Keep the iPhone unlocked. Locking it stops Screen Broadcast.

TslaMirror supports iPhone and iPad mirroring, but it is not CarPlay. A 5 GHz Personal Hotspot is strongly recommended; on supported iPhones, keep “Maximize Compatibility” off after the Tesla has connected.

Connection troubleshooting

Can I use an iPad on another phone’s hotspot, or put the car and phone on home Wi-Fi?

The documented Tesla setup uses the Personal Hotspot of the iPhone or cellular iPad that is running TslaMirror. Connecting the casting device and the car as clients of a home router, travel router or another phone’s hotspot is a different network arrangement; being on the same Wi-Fi alone does not establish the required Tesla Proxy connection.

A Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot provide a cellular Personal Hotspot. For the supported starting point, run TslaMirror on the iPhone providing the hotspot and connect the car to it. See Personal Hotspot requirements. Android’s Wi-Fi-sharing options do not establish support for the same arrangement on iOS.

What if TslaMirror closes immediately or will not open on the iPhone?

First distinguish the iPhone app closing from the Tesla browser closing. If the iPhone app cannot open, check the current iOS compatibility requirement on its App Store page, install an available app update, close and reopen the app, and restart the iPhone if needed. Video resolution and frame-rate changes do not diagnose an app that cannot reach its main screen.

If it still closes, contact support with the iPhone model, iOS version, TslaMirror version and the step that triggers the closure. If the app stays open but the car page fails, follow connection troubleshooting instead.

Why does the casting address fail to open, or show the product website?

https://TslaMirror.com connects to the server running on your iPhone. It is available through the prepared local connection; it is not a public page that you can test from any network. TeslaMirror.com, with an extra “e”, is the product and support website.

Check that the Tesla is connected to the hotspot of the iPhone running TslaMirror, rather than home Wi-Fi or another phone. Enable Proxy, start Screen Broadcast, keep the iPhone unlocked, and type the full HTTPS address into the browser’s address bar. Use the iOS setup sequence and the app’s Casting Checklist.

Does the iPhone need a SIM or cellular data? Is 5 GHz the same as 5G?

The documented iPhone setup uses Personal Hotspot, which requires working cellular data through a SIM or eSIM and a carrier plan that supports tethering. A Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot provide this cellular Personal Hotspot. If the iPhone shows SOS or has no data connection, first confirm that Safari can open an ordinary website over cellular data. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot troubleshooting.

5 GHz is the frequency of the local Wi-Fi hotspot; 5G is a cellular network technology. A 4G/LTE connection can still be used with a 5 GHz hotspot. The mirroring stream stays on the local network, while online media and the car’s Internet services can use cellular data. Android has different network options.

I skipped a permission or use another VPN. What should I check?

In iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, allow TslaMirror to connect locally. Return to TslaMirror and allow its VPN configuration when enabling Proxy. Completing the initial setup without these permissions does not grant them automatically. Location permission serves a separate purpose: reading the Wi-Fi network name.

If another VPN or network-filtering app is active, temporarily disconnect it and retry Proxy and Screen Broadcast. A competing VPN can interfere with the local connection. See Apple’s Local Network permission guide.

The casting page stopped working after an update. What should I try?

Update TslaMirror, reconnect the Tesla to the correct iPhone hotspot, and refresh the casting page once. If the page offers Reload, use it to load the current resources.

If an old or incomplete page remains, use the vehicle’s Controls → Service → Clear Browser Data option when available. Review the selected data before confirming so that you keep bookmarks or history you want to retain. Then repeat the setup. Restarting the phone and infotainment system can also help. Test with an ordinary app first; a black screen confined to protected video is a separate app compatibility issue.

Sound, screen lock and performance

The picture freezes when I switch to another app. Must TslaMirror stay on screen?

Screen Broadcast is intended to continue when you open another app. In TslaMirror, tap Start, then confirm Start Broadcast in the iOS system dialog. Opening the car webpage or enabling Proxy alone does not start screen capture. Leave TslaMirror running in the background and keep the iPhone unlocked.

Test by opening the iPhone Home Screen or Settings. If that also freezes, check whether Screen Broadcast is still active, restart the broadcast if it stopped, and follow update and webpage recovery. If ordinary screens update but one video app stops or goes black, use the video-specific checks. Avoid force-closing TslaMirror during a session.

I can hear a video but cannot see it. Is every black screen caused by DRM?

No. First test while parked with the iPhone Home Screen or Settings, then with a video you recorded yourself in an app that permits capture.

  • Ordinary screens update, but one video is black: the source app or content may restrict capture. Some iOS players, including apps using AVPlayer, may also prevent capture. Sound or subtitles can still appear when the video is blocked. See app compatibility and Apple’s screen-recording limitations.
  • The whole picture is blank or frozen: check Screen Broadcast, the hotspot and Proxy, then reload the current casting page. If H.265 does not play in the browser, try H.264 in a new session; see video mode settings.

Premium access does not remove a source app’s capture restrictions. A black screen alone does not prove that a particular phone or vehicle is incompatible.

How do I reduce black borders, move the picture, or recover after full-screen playback freezes?

The phone screen and car browser can have different aspect ratios. Fitting the whole phone screen preserves all of it and may leave borders; cropped full-screen fills the available area by cutting off part of the image. Higher resolution improves detail but does not change that shape.

Expand the webpage buttons to find the directional controls at the bottom right. Move the image left, right, up or down, or use the center button to reset it. In cropped full-screen, these controls choose which part remains visible. See the screen-position controls.

If the picture freezes only after entering full-screen, return to the normal browser view and reload the casting page while parked. Check ordinary mirroring before retrying. Image placement inside the webpage does not move Tesla’s browser window or change vehicle browser restrictions.

How do I finish mirroring if the VPN indicator remains on?

Stop Screen Broadcast, then return to TslaMirror and switch Proxy off. Screen capture and the local proxy are separate parts of the connection; closing the car browser alone is not a reliable way to end both.

Check the iPhone’s VPN status after turning Proxy off. If ordinary Internet access is still affected, test it with the TslaMirror proxy stopped and check any other active VPN or network-filtering app. If the problem persists, restart the iPhone and contact support with the exact symptoms. An Internet problem occurring during mirroring does not by itself identify its cause.

The picture works but there is no sound. How do I start audio?

Enable Lossless Audio in the app’s mirroring settings, start audio in an app that allows capture, and tap the audio button on the casting webpage. The browser needs an initial interaction before playing sound. Touch the page to reveal controls if they are hidden, and check the vehicle’s volume and audio source.

Current versions support browser audio in H.264, H.265 and MJPEG; the older restriction to H.264/H.265 no longer applies. Bluetooth audio is a separate route and requires pairing the phone with the vehicle and selecting it as the audio source. DRM can block sound even when the picture works; see compatibility.

Can I lock the iPhone or turn its screen off while mirroring?

No. iOS Screen Broadcast stops when the iPhone locks. Keep it unlocked during mirroring; lowering screen brightness is different from locking it. If the phone locks, unlock it, return to TslaMirror, and start Screen Broadcast again.

The Android app’s Classic Mirroring screen controls and Single-app Casting do not apply to the iOS app.

What can I do about lag, audio delay or a hot iPhone?

Use a stable 5 GHz hotspot and begin with moderate settings such as 720p. If playback stutters, lower resolution, frame rate or video quality, then increase one setting at a time. Higher quality increases local bandwidth and processing demands. Try H.265 first, or H.264 if the browser cannot play H.265.

If audio delay builds up, restart audio using the webpage’s audio control. If the phone becomes hot, pause mirroring and let it cool before testing lower settings. Stop Screen Broadcast when finished so capture does not continue unnecessarily.

Common questions

Can I finish setup if I decline a permission request?

In 9.87, a consistent Continue button appears before the first permission request, followed by the system dialog where you choose whether to grant access. The corresponding button labels have been updated in all 29 interface languages.

You can complete setup and reach the main screen after declining location access, local network access, or the VPN configuration request. You can also continue when location access is restricted or Location Services are off. If VPN configuration is declined or installation fails, you can retry or continue. Permissions required for mirroring still need to be granted when you use the relevant features.

How do I change the app and mirroring webpage language?

In TslaMirror 9.83, open Settings → Language and choose a language or Follow System. The app and mirroring webpage offer 29 languages. An open page updates its text automatically without restarting mirroring. Arabic and Hebrew use right-to-left layouts; longer text, larger fonts, and VoiceOver language selection have also been improved. See the full language list.

Do I need to reload the page after stopping, restarting, or updating mirroring?

After opening TslaMirror.com with the updated app, the webpage follows starts, stops, restarts, and switches between MJPEG, H.264, and H.265 automatically. It shows setup guidance when idle, recovery messages when disconnected, and updates its status when the connection returns.

Version 9.85 improves caching and loading to reduce outdated or mismatched files. A Reload button appears when the page detects a version change. After updating to 9.87: If your browser still has a mirroring page open from before the update, refresh it once to load the latest remote control fix.

What changed for iPhone Duo, rotation, and larger text?

Version 9.85 refines Home, Settings, and mirroring preparation for iPhone Duo inner and outer displays and different screen sizes. Switching displays or rotating the device better preserves the current page, checked options, and unconfirmed settings. Buttons and temperature warnings display text more reliably at larger text sizes or narrow widths; Back, Refresh, Cancel, and Confirm have refined icons and accessibility labels.

What changed for stale images after rotation or MJPEG freezing on the last frame?

Update to 9.85 or later. Version 9.85 improves H.264, H.265, and MJPEG handling when the mirrored image changes size or orientation, reducing stale images and recovery delays. It also fixes cases where MJPEG stayed frozen on the last frame after a stream connection ended. Refresh once if a pre-update mirroring page is still open.

Does stopping screen sharing from the system interface count as an error?

Version 9.85 treats stopping screen sharing from the system interface as a normal stop, avoiding an incorrect mirroring error.

When does a video mode change take effect, and which mode should I try?

Changing the mode applies to your next mirroring session and does not interrupt the current one. Try H.265 first, then H.264 if the browser does not support H.265. Extreme and Ultimate settings use higher H.264/H.265 bitrates in 9.83 to retain more picture detail, but require more local network bandwidth.

In 9.87, Settings → Mirroring mode makes the selected mode more prominent and separates it from the recommendation. Text sizes, colors, paragraph spacing, and wrapping have been refined for Light and Dark appearances and larger text sizes.

What changed for 32-bit lossless audio in Chrome?

Version 9.83 fixes distortion that could occur with some 32-bit FLAC stereo audio while preserving the original audio precision. Lossless encoding now needs less computation, although the amount of audio data sent over the local connection may increase. Audio/video reading and buffering are also more reliable.

How do I mirror an iPhone to a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y?

Connect the Tesla to the iPhone Personal Hotspot, open TslaMirror, enable Proxy, tap Start and Start Broadcast, then open https://TslaMirror.com in the Tesla browser. Keep the iPhone unlocked while mirroring. TslaMirror.com, without the letter “e” after “T”, is different from the official product website TeslaMirror.com. The technical requirement is MCU2 or MCU3 hardware, so compatibility should be checked by infotainment hardware rather than model name alone. MCU2 or MCU3 hardware is required: available on Model 3 and Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S built after March 2018, Model X built after March 2018, or vehicles upgraded from MCU1 to MCU2/3.

Is TslaMirror the same as AirPlay or Apple CarPlay?

No. TslaMirror uses iOS Screen Broadcast and the iPhone Personal Hotspot. See how browser mirroring differs from AirPlay and CarPlay.

Does iPhone screen mirroring use Internet data?

The mirroring stream stays inside the iPhone Personal Hotspot network and is not routed through a public mirroring server. The Tesla may still use the iPhone's cellular data for its own online services while connected to the hotspot.

Which apps can be mirrored?

Commonly tested apps include Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps, YouTube, TikTok, Plex, and others. Support ultimately depends on how each third-party app renders its content.

Why do Netflix, Apple Music, or other video apps show a black screen or muted audio?

DRM-protected content and iOS apps that use AVPlayer may prevent video or audio capture. Netflix is not supported. Apple Music may allow the screen to appear while muting its audio during Screen Broadcast.

If you are unsure whether this is a content restriction or a connection problem, follow the black-screen diagnostic steps.

Why does TslaMirror use a VPN?

Tesla browsers block normal private-LAN ranges. TslaMirror creates a virtual IP and a local VPN tunnel between the iPhone and the Tesla so the browser can reach the phone. The tunnel does not connect to a public VPN server, and the local web server is not available from the public Internet.

Why do iOS instructions mention 240.3.3.3?

TslaMirror still uses 240.3.3.3 internally as a local virtual IP. It is not a public Internet server, and the Tesla browser no longer supports opening it directly. Do not enter this IP as the connection address; open https://TslaMirror.com instead.

Why does Wi-Fi disconnect when the vehicle shifts out of Park?

In the Tesla Wi-Fi settings, select the iPhone hotspot and enable Remain Connected in Drive when that option is available. Configure and test this only while safely parked.

What network settings are recommended?

Use a 5 GHz iPhone Personal Hotspot whenever possible. On iPhone 12 and later, “Maximize Compatibility” changes the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and normally should remain off after connection. Network quality can vary with the phone, signal conditions, and vehicle.

Why is Location Services requested?

On iOS 13 and later, Location Services is used only to read the Wi-Fi network name (SSID). Location data is not stored or collected. Location Services must be on and TslaMirror must have “While Using the App” or “Always” access for this function to work.

Bluetooth Mouse Remote

Can I control the iPhone by touching the Tesla screen without extra hardware?

Displaying the iPhone screen does not enable touch control by itself. Basic mirroring needs no extra control hardware, but iOS Bluetooth Mouse Remote requires an M5Stack AtomS3-Lite (SKU:C124), TslaMouse firmware 0.3.3 or later, iOS 18 or later, and AssistiveTouch. Pair and configure the device using the Bluetooth Mouse Remote guide.

If the hardware is already connected but the webpage remains viewing-only, follow the remote-control recovery steps. Android uses different control methods; its Accessibility setup cannot be used to enable iPhone control.

Why is remote control unavailable even though TslaMouse is connected and the picture looks normal?

Version 9.87 fixes an issue where TslaMouse was connected and ready, but the webpage stayed in viewing-only mode and did not accept remote input. Update to 9.87 and refresh the mirroring page once if it was open before the update. This loads the latest remote control fix.

Version 9.85 refines control positioning after screen size or orientation changes, reducing unintended actions from delayed commands or outdated calibration. Cancellation and saving are improved so interrupted calibration does not affect later results.

The webpage hides remote control status messages, touch instructions, and some action pop-ups during normal use to reduce clutter. Remote control buttons and actions remain available.

The iOS Bluetooth Mouse Remote requires a separate M5Stack AtomS3-Lite (SKU:C124) running TslaMouse firmware 0.3.3 or later, plus iOS 18 or later and AssistiveTouch.

Purchases, codes and subscriptions

Is downloading TslaMirror free, and is a monthly subscription required?

TslaMirror is free to download, but downloading it does not grant unlimited paid access. The iOS app offers a monthly subscription and a one-time Lifetime option; a monthly subscription is not the only way to unlock access. Check the current App Store and in-app purchase screens for prices, available trials and renewal terms.

If you already purchased access, use Restore Purchase with the original App Store account before placing another order. iOS purchase and trial options are separate from the Android app’s daily free allowance.

How do I restore iOS access after reinstalling or changing iPhone?

Use the same Apple Account for App Store purchases that made the original purchase, update TslaMirror, and keep the phone online. Open the app, allow its purchase check to finish, then use Restore Purchase if access is still missing. Check the App Store account even if iCloud is signed in successfully. See Apple’s purchase restoration guide.

An iOS purchase is separate from an Android purchase. Restore Purchase on iPhone cannot restore Google Play Lifetime Premium or a Google Play promo code. If an Apple purchase is recorded but access remains missing, contact support before buying it again.

Where do I redeem a code issued for the iOS app?

For a valid App Store code, open the App Store → profile → Redeem Code (called Redeem Gift Card or Code on some versions), enter the code and complete Apple’s confirmation. Check the Apple Account shown before redeeming. See Apple’s code-redemption instructions.

Return to TslaMirror while online and allow the purchase status to update. If access is missing, follow Restore Purchase with the same App Store account. A code already successfully redeemed should not be entered repeatedly. Google Play codes belong to the Android app and cannot be redeemed in the App Store.

How do I cancel an iOS monthly subscription if I already have Lifetime access?

Open the iPhone system Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → TslaMirror → Cancel Subscription. This is Apple’s system Settings, not the settings inside TslaMirror. Review the renewal or expiry status there. See Apple’s cancellation guide.

A one-time Lifetime purchase is not a monthly subscription, and it does not automatically cancel a separate monthly subscription. If the subscription is missing, check the Apple Account on the purchase receipt. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

How do I request a refund for an iOS purchase?

For purchases billed by Apple, sign in to Apple’s Report a Problem service with the purchasing Apple Account, choose the relevant item and request a refund. Apple reviews eligibility and handles the refund; app support cannot approve or issue it directly. See Apple’s refund instructions.

If you also want to stop future monthly charges, cancel the subscription separately.

Privacy and support

What data is transmitted during iPhone screen sharing?

The broadcast sends the captured screen and supported app audio from the iPhone to the Tesla browser over the Personal Hotspot network. The mirroring stream is not routed through a public mirroring server. Anything visible in the captured screen, including a notification banner, may appear in the car; hide sensitive content before starting.

On iOS 13 and later, Location Services lets TslaMirror read the Wi-Fi network name (SSID); location data is not stored or collected. TslaMirror does not collect personal information, usage statistics, or analytics. The Tesla’s own online services and the apps you open may still use Internet data.

The public support website is separate from the app and may use Google Analytics. Read the screen-sharing data and permissions overview and website analytics disclosure.
